A Country Doctor's Notebook is a collection of semiautobiographical short stories by Mikhail Bulgakov, inspired by his experiences working as a young doctor in rural Russia during the years before the Russian Revolution. Fresh out of medical school, the unnamed protagonist arrives at an isolated countryside hospital, where he must confront harsh weather, primitive conditions, superstitious villagers, and lifeordeath medical emergencies far beyond his experience.
